|The dual-rail quantum bit and quantum error correction|

We present a new representation of the fundamental element of a quantum computer: the dual-rail quantum bit (qtbit), which naturally embeds redundancy useful for quantum error correction. We show two key results, first, that phase and amplitude damping of a qtbit may be modeled by the classical binary crossover and erasure channels, and second, that these errors may be corrected by surprisingly simple quantum circuits using elementary quantum optics technology.
