Self organisation in metabolic pathways

We have used charts of metabolic pathways to investigate the connectivity of the reaction networks, using the number of pathways involving a given metabolite as an indicator of connectivity. We find that the number of metabolites involved in a given number of pathways follows a power law distribution. We model the system as a 'clustered network' and use algebraic graph theory to show that such a model exhibits small worlds type behaviour. We discuss some consequences for the evolution autocatalytic networks.
