We introduce SIMP, a programming environment for cellular automata and lattice-gases, and demonstrate its use as a laboratory for studying n-dimensional, spatially-distributed systems in which complex macroscopic phenomena arise as the aggregate of some simple, local, spatially-invariant, microscopic dynamics. By way of example, we demonstrate methods of specifying, visualizing, statistically characterizing, scripting, and interactively controlling SIMP experiments.
