|Agent-based simulation framework for studies of cognitive pedestrian agent behavior in an urban environment with crisis|
We report on the design of an agent-based simulation framework that will facilitate the study of hybrid cognitive pedestrian agent behavior in an urban environment. The hybrid design of a pedestrian agent, which has a personality type, incorporates locomotion rules as well as cognitive capabilities and emotions. The cognitive assessments regarding goal selection are affected not only by environmental changes but also by the emotional state of the agent as filtered through its personality. Locomotion rules are empirically based. The design of the simulation framework includes templates for developing the urban area as well as for building specific pedestrain agents. The templates allow the user/analyst to build rules that describe a pedestrian agent's behavior, within the constraints of its personality. From a software architectural perspective, the hybrid pedestrian agent is composed of modular code segments and rules; a rule engine is utilized in the rule evaluations. The simulation framework supports the design of detailed urban geometries for studies of agent behavior and the resulting traffic patterns. The traffic patterns that reflect agent behavior in a crisis situation can be investigated for specific urban geometries. The design of the simulation framework is an outgrowth of earlier studies involving the hybrid agent system design as well investigations of pedestrian agents in crisis scenarios. We report on results of this earlier study, and highlight the connections to complex system behavior.
