Understanding the Complexity of the Romany Diaspora |
Subject(s): CX.4
Category: Article
Abstract:
In this paper we attempt to understand the complexities of the Romany diaspora. In this effort, we initially approach contextual and definitional problems and after resolving them, we next turn to the implications of comparative linguistic and biogenetic data, which we use to interpret more common demographic materials. In this context, we attempt to uncover and then map some of the hitherto unknown and generally “mysterious” origins of the Romany tribes and their cultural “markers”. We include primary data relating to the empirical study of Romany Music and the contemporary distribution of Romany musicians. We include, via appendices both demographic information as well as a short extract on the key social role of Romany musicians in Israel and the complexities of the Romany diasopora in the Middle East. We include, in a separate appendix, non-transformed, primary data regarding the distribution and relational properties of three generations of contemporary Romany musicians.
