Category: Brief Article

On the whole, information professionals design the components of "next generation" information systems with little understanding of the systemic implications of their work. The science of information dynamics remains woefully underdeveloped. Can systems theorists help information professional understand the system-level implications of "local" design decisions? Does it make any sense to speak of "engineering" emergent properties? This paper explores ways of rendering these questions more tractable, and proposes that we recognize the emerging field of nonequilibrium design.
